      This woodcut (Holzschnitt) depicts an anthropomorphic goat playing the violin beneath an oil lamp — a recurring motif in Chagall’s work, symbolizing Yiddish folklore, dreamlike reverie, and emotional memory. The rawness of the carved wood is here counterbalanced by the delicacy of the impression: deep black ink, subtle and flat printing, on a sumptuous long-fiber Chinese paper, applied as chine collé or printed flat, with a silky transparency.
